"Godzina przed świtem" R.Ziemkiewicz Homage to Doomed Soldiers When, after the Second World War, the German army left the Polish land, the soldiers fighting for the independence of the Republic of Poland refused to lay down their weapons. In January 1944 the Red Army entered the Polish territory least of all to bring us peace and freedom. To suppress the Polish spirit and to establish a new regime, the communists eliminated the intellectual elite, activists and soldiers of the Polish Underground who survived the war. Although severely devastated by persistent fighting with the Germans, the Underground guarded the independence of the State. The last soldiers of Free Poland were up in arms to commence their hopeless battle. Doomed to failure and struggling with the indifference of the world, the soldiers of the Polish Underground fought with the Soviet invader and internal collaborators. Józef Franczak, a 45-year old Home Army veteran was the last soldier of the Anticommunist Underground. With an arrest warrant issued against him, he was tracked and died during a manhunt in the Lublin district in autumn 1963. Ready to fight with his gun in hand, he hid out for 24 years. All the people in the photos either died in combat with the Soviet NKVD, Internal Security Corps (KBW), Public Security Office (UB) and Civic Militia (MO), or were murdered, or lost without a trace. How many pictures of the soldiers faithful to Free Poland have not survived? Over 50 years have passed since those events took place but the knowledge thereof remains incomplete to this day. The common awareness is still based on false stereotypes being a product of the communist propaganda. All those clichés have been reinforced by pseudo historians of the Peoples Republic of Poland who, for 45 years, referred to those times as the period of strengthening the peoples power. An extremely false image of the 1940s. and 1950s. they created was presented in manuals, encyclopedias and newspapers. The historians were supported by socialist artists, writers and filmmakers whose work of art depicted the image of those years as viewed by the Polish United Workers Party (PZPR). Such practices were continued unit the fall of the Peoples Republic of Poland (PRL). The communist propaganda focused not only on misinformation but also on presenting the representatives of the Independent Movement as the vilest and most despicable criminals. Traitors, nazi underground, scurvy reactionary midgets, bandits are just a few of the expressions used by the communist propaganda to slander the soldiers of Free Poland before the eyes of the society.
